About Us

Welcome!

Toronto Buddhist Church Reopening

To Toronto Buddhist Church members, friends and supporters:

We are pleased to announce that we opened our doors for Sunday Services on September 13th , 2020. The safety of all our temple members and guests continues to be at the forefront and we thank everyone for adhering to the new protocols that we have put in place.  At this time we are not open for other activities or Children’s Services at the temple.

You will notice changes at the temple including many signs and posters meant to keep everyone safe.

CHANGES TO OUR SERVICES since September 2020

We have been providing in-person and on-line services each week since we reopened in September.  As the in-person services have not been well-attended due to COVID-19, we are reducing the number of in-person services to  two (2) per month starting in December.  They will be held on the first and third Sundays of the month.  The first Sunday will be our Shotsuki Memorial Service, while the third Sunday will be the Special Service of the month.

However we will have on-line services each week.  We will continue with Facebook Live until the end of November (please see our calendar page for the link).  In December, we will change our on-line format to Zoom.  Our current broadcast format on Facebook Live is strictly one-way.   Zoom will give our attendees an opportunity to see each other and have some interaction before and after services in a safe manner.  It will also give us the opportunity to host guest speakers or Ministers.  Zoom has improved its security issues over the past few months and in order to control who attends the services, you will need to request an invitation to attend. You will be able to access the service with a computer (with a working microphone and speakers and a camera), a smart phone or a tablet.

If you are interested in attending the virtual Zoom Services starting in December, please send an email request to tbc@tbc.ca to be put on the invitation list.  You will be invited each week and it will be your choice to attend.   Hope to “see” you there!

The onset of COVID-19 has highlighted the fact that our individual actions affect our collective health. Therefore, we have taken great care to create in-depth safety protocols in accordance with local and federal regulations and international recommendations.  Please take the time to read all of the information and protocols and do your best to adhere to the new requirements.

General Requirements/Protocols for Service Attendees

To help reduce and minimize exposure to and to control the spread of COVID-19, the following protocols will be implemented for those attending in-person services.

  1. Due to the restricted numbers permitted in the hondo, anyone who wishes to attend an in-person service on Sunday, will be required to pre-register via email, our website or telephone, by Thursday at midnight. The preferred method is through email or our website so as not to overwhelm the office. Registration on the website is available for all services marked OPEN. Registration by telephone is available only starting the Monday prior.  All attendees (including children) must be registered. Please indicate if you wish to sit with others who are in your social circle.  Registration after Thursday is by availability only – including seating preferences.
  2. There are NO CHILDREN’S SERVICES or KID’s SANGHA at this time.
  3. All individuals will be asked to sanitize their hands and submit a completed health questionnaire to a greeter as they enter the temple through the front door only. This information will be used for contact tracing purposes and will be destroyed after 30 days. Please arrive early to allow for physical distancing and entry protocols.
  4. Anyone who has travelled outside the country within the past 2 weeks, is not feeling well, is showing any of the signs listed in the health questionnaire, or suspects they have been exposed to COVID-19 should stay home. Please join the TBC Broadcast Group (please see our calendar page for the link) to view our live-streamed on Facebook Live.
  5. Everyone will be required to wear a face covering for the entire time they are on TBC property (including the parking lot) as required by the City of Toronto By-Law 541-2020.
  • TBC will have disposable non-surgical face masks or reusable cloth face masks available for purchase/donation for those who do not bring their own.
  • Any individual who cannot or refuses to wear a face covering will be asked to leave, as we are concerned about the safety of everyone attending our services.
  1. Everyone will be directed into the Hondo and assisted to find a seat.  Please do not move the chairs.
  2. Everyone is asked to bring their own nenju, montoshikisho and service books, if you have them as there will be none to borrow.  Headsets will not be available. You will be asked to hold your homyo cards in your lap if you bring them.
  3. There will be no group singing or chanting out loud. Only the Minister/leader will chant.
  4. Offertory baskets will not be passed. Please leave your offertory in the box at the entrance to the hondo.
  5. At the end of the service, everyone will be escorted directly out of the building.  Cleaning and disinfecting of the temple will take place.
