Meet Rev. Kensho Hashimoto
(Starting April 1, 2024)
Rev. Kensho Hashimoto will be commencing his Minister training at the Toronto Buddhist Church this April for one year. He hails from Kanagawa prefecture in Japan, where he grew up in a family temple built by his father 30 years ago. He studied Japanese history at Doshisha University in Kyoto and is now focusing on Graduate School of Practical Shin Buddhism at Ryukoku University, specializing in the organizational theory of Jodo Shinshu temples and Dharma Talks.
During a break in his studies, Rev. Hashimoto improved his English at Thompson Rivers University while assisting at the Kamloops Buddhist Temple. Inspired by the global devotion to Nembutsu, particularly at the World Buddhist Women’s Convention (WBWC) in San Francisco, he pursued his Tokudo ordination in the fall of 2019 and Kyoshi ordination in the summer of 2022.
He enjoys sports, having attended baseball and soccer games in Japan and discovering a love for curling in Kamloops. He looks forward to his Minister training at the temple and is eager to share in the collective journey of Nembutsu devotion.

橋本顕正と申します。
このたび、4月から1年間、TBCで開教使の研修を受けることになりました。
現在28歳です。
神奈川県生まれで、父が住職を務めるお寺で育ちました。実家のお寺は父が30年ほど前に建てた新しい寺院です。
京都の同志社大学で日本史を学び、卒業後、現在は龍谷大学大学院の実践真宗学研究科という研究科で学んでいます。具体的にどんなことをやっているのかというと、浄土真宗寺院の組織論や法話の作り方などを勉強させていただいております。
また、2022年9月から2023年4月までは、大学院での勉強を中断し、BC州のカムループスにあるトンプソンリバーズ大学という大学で英語のクラスに通いながら、カムループス仏教会にて開教使の先生のお手伝いをさせていただく経験に恵まれました。
私が開教使として生きていきたいと思った理由は、日本以外の国々で皆さんのようにお念仏を大切にされている方々に感銘を受けたからです。2019年にサンフランシスコで開催されたWBWC（世界仏教婦人大会）に参加し、言葉は通じなくても同じ浄土真宗の教え「南無阿弥陀仏」でつながっていることに感動しました。その出来事がきっかけで、2019年秋に得度し、僧侶とならせていただき、2022年夏には教師という資格を受けさせていただきました。
これといった趣味は特にありませんが、スポーツが好きで、日本ではプロ野球やサッカーの試合をよく見に行っていました。また、カムループスではカーリングを初めて経験し、夢中になりました。
最後に、これからのTBCでの1年間を楽しみにしています。
