Sangha is predominantly a male group established in 1950 by young Nisei (second generation) men who took on a leadership role at the Temple. Early on, this group established and implemented key ideas that enabled the Temple to thrive and grow over time.
Such innovations included;
- Incorporating TBC in 1952
- Building Camp Lumbini (3 cottages) at Wasaga Beach in 1964. To this day, our youth and young adult groups enjoy summer camp there every year and Temple members can rent out the cottages with family and friends during the Summer months
- Management of the Youth Building Fund and establishment of the pledge system and a group service system.
Today, the Sangha are still very active at the Temple and participate in special events such as the Bazaar, mochi tsuki (rice pounding), Keirokai and Hana Matsuri. They also host the annual Hana Matsuri Family Banquet.
Sangha meets on the first Sunday of the month after morning service. They hold their Annual General Meeting in November. New members are always welcome!
Groups like the Sangha are the backbone of the Temple when it comes to supporting the community inside and outside our doors. Due to the dedication of these groups we have become a strong community and family, creating a warm and caring environment where we can learn about the Dharma and enjoy each other’s company.
